The United States and Israel continued their joint military strikes on Iran for a fourth day on Tuesday (March 3).
US President Donald Trump had earlier suggested that its military operations against Iran could last up to four weeks, but has since said that the US has “the capability to go far longer" than its initially projected time frame.
Iran has responded to the attacks by targeting some of the United States’ American military bases in the Middle East, while declaring the Strait of Hormuz closed and threatening to attack any vessel that attempts to pass.
President calls for peaceful resolution
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake urged all parties involved in the current conflict in the Middle East to commit to a peaceful resolution soon.
“Our position is that all parties involved in this conflict should work towards making a way for a peaceful resolution as this conflict threatens economic stability across the world, including Sri Lanka,” President Dissanayake told Parliament.
While acknowledging the impact of the conflict on the country’s energy supply, Dissanayake affirmed that the country had enough stocks of petrol and diesel for the next four weeks.
